Bento started hundreds of years ago, with rice balls and dried rice. It started from the simple need for food when farming, hunting, or even on the battlefield. Over time it has evolved into an artform.
To make that art easier there are tools like sausage cutters, sandwich cutters (these are very popular in the weastern world), egg shapers, veggie/fruit cutters, seaweed cutters and presses, sauce bottles, and food picks. There are even special packets to flavor and color your rice.
This is an example of a very simple bento inspired meal that I made myself. It's a ham and cheese sandwich cut to look like a dino, some apples cut to look like a dino, a kale and carrot salad with the carrots cut in dino shape.
